Some time ago, Peter promised an old friend, Marie (or Maz to her friends) to teach her how to ride a penny farthing. Marie had created a list of 50 things to do before she was 50 and this, for some bizarre reason, was one of them.
It's taken a few years to organise this (blame Covid) and Marie is now over 50 but a list is a list and so we weren't going to let her off the hook.
The Sweffling White Horse - the pub owned by Marie and her husband - has links to Peter's past and he supplied a lot of the timber for its renovation. Indeed, there is still a W J Berry & Sons Ltd sign on one of the outside tables (last photo) so it was fitting we met and returned there.
The photos give an overview of the processes involved in learning to ride the penny and credit must be given to Marie for overcoming her abject fear. But huge credit to Peter too - not a natural runner by any means - but to seeing him hurtling alongside Marie as she sailed off on the bike was quite something!
Just don't ask him why his legs ache this morning...
